about

Kibi Kibi is a wild cat, to be more specific and bring you closer to the scene, let's say it is a mongoose (Ogwang oluwo bondo) or skunk (ogwang’ akech). In the context of this song the phrase Kibi Kibi is used to praise a professor. It highlights his choices of company which must rate highly in education and status. It is to wonder how a friendship between a roadside Jathum (nyatiti player) and Kibi Kibi came about, since these two are of a different class.
The first part of the piece illustrates how the two friends met. Kibi Kibi one day shared with Jathum his early memories of nyatiti as this was what was used to seduce his mother and grandmother.
Because of the risk for a young man to get arrested when walking by the roadside and since playing nyatiti is what will enable a jathum to bring dowry to his in-laws, it is better for a young man to play nyatiti than walking by the roadside. Yet in this second part of the song Kibi Kibi tells Jathum to move away from the roadside. The giver of praise becomes the one praised in this moment of empowerment for this young artist.
